SRI GANESHAYA NAMAHA
VARNAM
Senthil Menvum Deva Deva

The Varnam is the centrepiece of tonight’s performance, being the most complex and challenging piece of a Bharatanatyam recital. It requires the dancer to master a demanding blend of rhythmic footwork, intricate technique, and expressive storytelling. It is a true test of a dancer’s skill and stamina.
In this piece, Nirupama tells the story of a devotee's love and longing for Lord Muruga, the youthful warrior-god who is especially beloved and widely worshipped in South India.
The dance weaves in key moments from Muruga's story: his battle with the demon Soorapadman in the sacred seaside town of Thiruchendur, his defeat of the demon, and his transformation of the demon's body into his peacock vehicle and his rooster flag.
The Varnam then shifts to a powerful emotional journey, as the dancer conveys the devotee’s heartfelt pleas and playful complaints, expressing a longing for her beloved god to come to her. Through intricate rhythms and graceful movements, Nirupama brings this narrative of unwavering faith and deep devotion to life.
